Voting is compulsory

Candidates for the Manly Ward

  • Bonnie Harvey – Greens
  • Candy Bingham – Good For Manly
  • Sarah Gratton – Your Northern Beaches Independent Team
  • Brandt Clifford – Labor

How the votes are counted

Manly is one of five Wards that forms the Northern Beaches Local Government area (LGA). Each ward has approximately 36,000 voters registered to vote with the NSW Electoral Commission.

Using the Proportional Voting System, a candidate is elected if they receive votes equal to or exceeding the quota. The quota is determined by first dividing the aggregate number of first preferences by one more than the number of candidates to be elected. The quotient (disregarding the fraction) is increased by 1 to give the quota. In the Manly Ward there are three candidates to be elected to Council and so an estimated quota to get a candidate over the line and onto Council on first preferences is approximately 8,000 votes.

After the count of first preferences is complete, each candidate who has reached the quota is elected.

Where an elected candidate has a surplus of ballot papers (votes) over the quota, this surplus is transferred to the continuing candidates (i.e. those not yet elected or excluded). If multiple candidates are elected, each candidate’s surplus is transferred (one at a time) to the continuing candidates, from the highest surplus to the lowest.

Above the Line or Below the Line

In Manly Ward all groups have an Above the Line box A, B, C, D, in which you can number just 1 or 1, 2 & 3 next to your favourite candidates.

You can also vote for your favourite candidate Below the Line as well, but you must number 1 and 2 next to at least two candidates. You can write 3 or number all the boxes.

But remember only 3 candidates are being elected.
